v0.1.0 — First flight

The idea behind Slowlight, and the first systems that run on a real server: flight, trading on stale news, docking and the ship series.

Slowlight starts from one rule: nothing in the galaxy travels faster than a ship. There is no instant network. The price of water at a station three jumps away is whatever the last ship that came from there said it was. A pirate sighting is only as fresh as the courier who carried it.

That one rule decides most of the game. Knowing something before others is worth money. Carrying news is a job. And whoever controls the routes controls what everyone believes.

What is in v0.1.0

Docking at Velen Station: the docking computer flies the approach, the clamps close, the market opens.
  • Flight. Ships fly with Newtonian physics and an optional flight assist. The same code runs on the server and in the game, so your ship reacts instantly and the server still has the final say.
  • Trading on old information. Every station remembers prices and how old they are. When you dock, your ship's data bank and the station swap records. Fresh records pay.
  • Docking. Ask for clearance near a station and the docking computer flies you into the hangar.
  • Stations with a face. Every station's hangar mouth has its own control tower, name sign, colours and frame pattern, derived from the station's name. Velen does not look like Delen.

  • Ships you can see grow. Two series so far, Herald for couriers and traders and Hunter for fighting, each with five Mk frames. Every Mk is a different hull, not a bigger copy, and every module upgrade appears on the ship.
The shipyard: a Hunter Mk5 with every module at its limit.
  • A live server. Players see each other in the same star system. A test with 100 bots ran at 4–6 ms per server tick.
  • Accounts and two languages. You sign in with a captain name and password. The game connects over a secure WebSocket on port 443, so it works on networks that block game traffic. The game is in English and Turkish, and every text comes from translation files.
The galaxy map shows the best known price of a good in every system, coloured by how old that information is.

What comes next

Walking inside stations after docking, landing on planets, and then combat: pirates, the Seal Fleet, and defending the wormholes you open.

If you want to fly in the closed test, leave your email on the home page. We will write once.
