What is Slowlight?
Slowlight is a live space MMO in development. There is no galactic internet: prices, maps and news travel only on ships, so what you know about a distant system is as old as the last ship that came from there. You fly your own ship, trade on what you know, carry news, and decide which side you carry the truth for.
Is Slowlight free?
Yes, while it is in development. You download the game, create a captain and fly on the live server. How the finished game will be paid for has not been decided yet.
Which platforms does it run on?
Windows and Linux (64-bit), with macOS builds for some releases. You need a GPU that supports Vulkan or Metal, and an internet connection. You fly with keyboard and mouse; gamepad controls are mapped but still being tested.

Do I play with other people?
Yes. Every captain flies in the same galaxy on one server, and you see the other ships in your star system. The server has the final say on where every ship is, so everyone sees the same thing.
What does "news travels only as fast as your ship" mean?
Every station remembers prices and how old they are, and your ship carries a data bank. When you dock, the ship and the station swap records. The galaxy map shows the best price you know for each system, coloured by how old that knowledge is. Fresh information is worth money, which makes couriers, traders and liars part of the game.
What can I do in the current version?
Fly with Newtonian physics and flight assist, dock at stations, trade on old prices, upgrade your ship at the shipyard (two series with five Mk frames each), read the galaxy map, land at city spaceports on planets, and walk inside a Herald Mk1 or Mk2. Every release note lists what is new.

Is there combat?
Not yet. Next comes stepping out at the spaceport and walking into the cities. After that: real-time combat against pirates, the Seal Fleet and other captains.
Who opens the wormholes?
The permanent gates belong to the Dominion. Every other route will be a wormhole that a player opened, keeps alive with stabilisers and has to defend, or it collapses. This is planned and not in the current version.
Do I need an account?
You create a captain in the game with a name and a password. Your captain and ship are stored on the server.
Which languages is it in?
English and Turkish, in the game and on this site.
Why does Windows or macOS warn me about the app?
The apps are not yet signed by Microsoft or Apple. On Windows, choose More info and then Run anyway. On macOS, right-click the app and choose Open the first time. Every file is signed with our own minisign key, so you can check that it came from us.

Is the galaxy news real?
It is news from inside the game's universe. The Bureau of Tidings is the Dominion's propaganda office and may lie; the Open Way's courier whispers are slower but usually right. Neither is about the real world.
